DESCRIPTION

Award general info history good design award is a comprehensive program for the evaluation and encouragement of design organized by japan institute of design promotion (jdp). this award system was originally born in 1957, out of the belief that design was essential in breaking out of the cycle of poverty in japan. since then, the good design award has been given to outstanding designs for more than 50 years in the pursuit of prosperous lives and industrial development. approximately 37,000 good design awards have been given in continuing these efforts. jdp receives approximately 3,000 submissions from more than 1,000 companies and designers from inside / outside of japan every year. these designs are screened by about 60 design experts, who select and recommend those designs worthy of the good design awards. however, the good design awards is not a beauty contest, nor is it an award that assesses the design’s outcome in economic terms. rather, the good design awards is a system that aims to channel the eminent powers of distinctive designs to build prosperous lives and encourage sound industrial development. indeed, it is a campaign to brighten and enrich society through design. purpose this has been a program advancing lifestyle and industrial activity by selecting outstanding design. there are a variety of ways of raising lifestyle and advancing industry, but only design is able to achieve both of these goals at the same time. design links industry and private lives, and creates a virtuous cycle to build a prosperous society. design's ability to paint a picture of our near future is first embraced by the public. if design can pick up on the public's will and present specific measures to earn its support, design will be able to play a major role in moving society forward. the good design awards is a social tool to generate the virtuous cycle described above. g mark birth of g mark good design award winning items can promote its results by attaching "g mark". "g mark" was designed in 1957 when the good design products selection system (the predecessor of good design awards) was started. it was designed by mr. yusaku kamekura, a designer who left a major mark on the japanese design history. since then the "g mark" has been familiar to many people as a trustworthy symbol which connects industry and everyday life. g mark and consumers according to the survey done in september 2007, people who understand "g mark" as a proof of "good design award winning item" is approximately. 67%, and cognition rates is approximately. 87% if the people who has seen this mark or who know this mark vaguely are included. moreover, from this survey, people think that the g mark represents 1) excellent in function and performance, 2) attractive form (exterior appearance), 3) high quality, 4) excellent in usability. in short, consumers seem to recognize the items with g mark as "item with high quality and usability". and 47% of subjects answered they choose items with g mark when they purchase. there are many design awards that are similar to good design award in the world; however, no other awards have much trust as the good design award has. this may seem to be the result of that japanese design has been executed along with consumers. at the same time it can be considered that japanese design has developed by consumers trust and support toward design. good design award has played its role as a system that creates positive rotation that connects creators and users.
